Study Title:  Oxford Community Treatment Order Evaluation Trial

Study Acronym:  OCTET

Supervised Community Treatment Orders (CTOs) have been available in England and Wales as part of the new Mental Health Act from 3rd November, 2008.  The empirical evidence of the effects of CTOs, however remains inconclusive.  The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Oxford will conduct a randomised controlled trail of the new Supervised Community Treatment Orders.  The trail will compare the new provision with what is currently available for patients who need ongoing supervision in the community.

Research Objectives

This research explores whether the use of CTOs in these patients, compared to section 17 leave, will improve treatment adherence with a consequent reduction in relapse and readmission rates and improve in social stability.  The number of days in psychiatric hospitals in the 12-month follow-up period and adherence to prescribed medication will be analised.
